Vacation time

Some of us are leaving Jamesburg, leaving MonkeyBat in charge of a small crew of three. We plan on being gone until next weekend but given the hard road closures up at Carmel Valley Road, we'll be waiting on the outside with the rest of you to see how the fire progresses.

The fire is still not contained on this side of the dozer line so we trust that Jamesburg and Cachagua will still be standing when we return.

You can now find the Director's account of the fire at Tassajara and its effects here. Yesterday a couple of firecrews made it down the road to Tassajara to help with mopping up.

We'd like to thank some people for their sustained hard work in preparing Tassajara for the fire, and whose names you might not find elsewhere. Firstly the 15 who were ordered to leave Tassajara on the day before the fire: Aliyu Turaki, Bryan Clark, Carl Coppage, Devin Patel, Glenn Bradley, Jenine Alexander, Johan Ostlund, Joseph Schommer, Lauren Bouyea, Kim Seibel, Mark Macfarlane, Shundo David Haye, Steph Wenderski, Tim Kroll, Tom Johnson. Two people, Gina Horrocks and Michael Bodman left the day before the final evacuation.

For further information about Tassajara and the fire please see the SFZC website.

Nine bows of gratitude to you, and then nine bows again, for keeping this website alive and staying to care for Tassajara from the other side of the mountain. You've been an invaluable resource.

Yes, echoing comments above. Sitting with fire has been a lifeline to what is happening at Tassajara and Jamesburg for those of us who care deeply and are dispersed elsewhere in the world. Thank you so much for your work and have a much-earned rest.

Thank you so much for this blog. We were supposed to come as guests this Friday. Sorry we can't help come to clean up!

Enjoy your break.

If you haven't seen Capt. Mike's most recent post, go to Firefighter Blog. It's all about Tassajara, and it's very moving as well as clear and informative.

Capt Mike has again said it all. Go to http://firefighterblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Basin%20Complex
We on the outside will miss the posts from Jamesburg. They have been a vital lifeline. Thank you for all your good work, and rest well.

Thank you Jamesburg crew! I would also like to acknowledge that our fire monks have support now, which is wonderful news. Similar info has been posted on SFZC.org as well as a link to an SF Chronicle comic about the fire monks.

Jamesburgers, you have been invaluable parts of so many lives for so long now... Thank you for your great service to us all, in smoke, under pressure of evacuation yourselves. You have been the bell and han and drum whose sounds carry out into the world.

I hope you get some much deserved rest. Thanks for that gracious acknowledgment of all who made Tassajara ready for survival.

Keith and Leslie, thank you too--though we don't hear your voices here, I know well what you have been doing, and are still doing-- Illich called "shadow work" those labors without which the more visible things aren't possible. Your countless acts of connection, assistance, and communication, your hospitality to those who have landed at your door, your ongoing deep practice--these too I remain deeply grateful for, old tangaryo stablemate Keith, and Leslie, pioneer layperson daisho.

Chris and Kathleen, breathe deep some clearer and quiet air.

"I can think of no more stirring symbol of man''s humanity to man than a fire engine."

By: Kurt Vonnegut

That includes fire helicopters, bulldozers, people with hoses and shovels, people manning telephones, and on and on.

Professional firefighters, volunteer firefighters, and everyone in between, thank you for your humanity to your fellows and for your hard work.

Woohoo. Cuke.com has a photo of the five Tassajara firefighters.
(DC says that Steve's wife sent it.)

Regarding :

Do we really need more symbols of man and man?

What are we doing about our relationship to man and nature?
